With the recent rape of a 15-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man believed to be a taxi driver, we asked locals if they feel safe in taxis.
Tshepo Maele: “Fortunately, I haven't been a victim of crime, but my brother was once robbed of his belongings in a taxi at night.”
Andiswa Mbele: “As a member of the LGBTIQ+ community, I don't feel safe in taxis because I've been threatened by taxi drivers for being lesbian.”
Moonema Ramsammy: “As a woman, I can say I don't feel safe. A man once touched my thighs inside a taxi and when I asked what he was doing, he said he was entitled to touch me.”
Chene Moonala: “My late friend was dropped off far from her house one night, which resulted in her being a victim of crime. Taxis are no longer reliable.”
Sibusiso Sibiya: “As a result of a taxi driver refusing to take me to my destination after boarding the taxi at night, I ended up being robbed.”
