WATCH: Security guards shoot protester during Numsa wage protest

Numsa rolled out its national strike in the metal and engineering sector on October 5.

The second day of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa’s (Numsa) wage strike in Boksburg has seen one of the protesters being shot in the stomach after an altercation with a security guard from one of the local companies.

The incident happened at the corner of Paul Smit and Atlas Road in Anderbolt on October 6.

According to Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube, a group of protesters wearing Numsa T-shirts went to a local liquor wholesale to allegedly loot the store, however, security guards closed the gate to prevent them from entering the premise.

“A commotion then ensued between the security guards and the protesters. The protesters allegedly pelted the officers and the property with stones, prompting the security guards to retaliate by shooting at the protesters. The shooting resulted in one of the protesters sustaining a gunshot wound to his stomach and was rushed to hospital,” said Ramaube.

The police added that protesters then stormed the property and vandalised the guard room.

“The security guard who allegedly shot the protester was also attacked and he sustained injuries to his head and face. He too was rushed to hospital for medical assessment,” said Ramaube.

A case of attempted murder has been opened at the Boksburg North SAPS. No one has been arrested so far and investigations are continuing.
