Metro battles to deal with City’s water pipe leaks on time

The municipality has come under severe criticisms for ‘not paying enough attention’ in solving leakage issues.

You’d think that of all the reported leaks in the City, the one that occurs on council-owned properties would get fixed pretty quickly, but as residents of Boksburg will tell you, that’s sadly not the case.

According to concerned residents, they reported a leaky pipe at the Boksburg City Stadium about a year ago, but despite their efforts, the pipe is still not fixed.
“This water leak is more than a year now and we’ve entered a new financial year with a hike in property rates, but still nothing is maintained,” said one of the frustrated residents.

The Advertiser reached out to the metro for comment via email on September 21. And the metro spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, said he along with officials were on the site looking for the source of the leak on September 22.
After a quick inspection of the facility, they found that the lawn grass watering sprinkler system for the facility was damaged, with water coming out of the pipes and running down the outside field.

“The City will urgently send out a team of technicians to stop the located leakage and to also carry out further investigations to pinpoint the main cause of the leakage. The findings will help determine the long-term solution to prevent recurrence or major incidents before they happen,” explained Dlamini.

Gallons of clean drinking water are lost to leaks almost every day across the City, and the municipality has come under severe criticisms for ‘not paying enough attention’ in solving leakage issues.
Residents complained that they have been told to use water sparingly, yet the municipality doesn’t fix water leaks gushing out of its water pipe network on time.
Some streets in Boksburg have seen bursts and leaks that took the metro months to repair.
