It is against the law for a learner driver in possession of a learner’s licence to operate a motor vehicle on a public road unaccompanied by a qualified driver.
To operate a vehicle on a learner’s licence, you must be under the supervision of someone who possesses a valid driver’s licence, not a learner’s licence.
Penalty for driving with learners’ licence alone:
When stopped by EMPD officers, an R500 written notice/summon to appear in court could be issued to the offender. Also, motorists are given an option to either admit guilt by paying the stipulated amount (or even request for a reduction) or appear in court to dispute the written notice.
