Police raise GBV awareness through Operation Basadi

The men and women in uniform handed out pamphlets about gender-based violence and conducted a mass patrol.

In the spirit of Women’s Month, Boksburg SAPS management embarked on Operation Basadi (meaning women in Sotho) around Boksburg under the command of acting station commander Lt-Col Badelisile Ndwandwe on August 12.

According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sgt Ntsako Ledwaba, about 11 police officers, mostly women, handed out pamphlets to motorists on the corner of Trichardts Road and Kingfisher Avenue, informing them about gender-based violence (GBV). Pamphlets were also handed out in areas such as the Boksburg CBD and complexes in Sunward Park and Parkrand.

They worked with stakeholders such as ADT Fidelity, Makopano Risk Solutions, Graphite Security and members of the Youth Desk.

Furthermore, Ledwaba said the women in uniform and stakeholders conducted a high visibility patrol.
She explained the main objective of Operation Basadi was to raise awareness about GBV.

“We want the community to know they must not keep quiet about gender-based violence. They must immediately report these incidents to the police,” she said.

Ledwaba said the operation was a success.

Quizzed on if she has a message of motivation to share with young women who want to join the SAPS, Ledwaba said: “It would be a good thing if these women join the SAPS as they understand GBV. They can visit their nearest police station or www.saps.gov.za for more information on how to become part of the police force.”
