Post a Can’s latest collection drive a success

The collected items were handed over to Urban Ruins, a centre for children.

The Post a Can/Sandwich project’s charity collection drive at the SPAR on Rietfontein Road on July 31 proved to be a huge success.

According to one of the Post a Can/Sandwich volunteers, Natalina da Conceicao, they collected enough necessities, such as maize meal, sugar and bread, to fill the boot of two cars.

“I’m touched by how many people came out to make donations. This might have been the best turnout we ever had.”

She explained the collected items were handed over to Urban Ruins, a centre for children.

Da Conceicao expressed her gratitude to other volunteers and everybody who contributed.

“Some of our loyal supporters brought boxes of items, and it means a lot to us. We know times are tough for everybody right now.

“We would also like to thank all the NPOs for the incredible work they are doing,” she said.
A group of friends initiated the project in June 2020 to assist charity organisations during the pandemic by collecting non-perishable foods and items, such as toys and clothing.

“The initiative is now just over a year old, and we’re proud of what we accomplished so far. In the future, we would just like to continue to help NPOs,” da Conceicao.

Since the volunteers started the initiative, they assisted charity organisations from the East Rand, such as Chubby Chums, Kuselo Child and Youth Care Services, St Francis Care Centre and Kids Haven.

The volunteers are collecting donations every first Saturday of the month between 10:00 and 12:00. The next collection will take place on September 4. Da Conceicao said they are still deciding which charity they are going to support.
