Caxton recognised for supporting food drive

The food drive collected over 700 tonnes of much-needed food to support thousands of people and animals amid the pandemic.

The Portuguese Forum of South Africa recently presented Caxton Local Media with a token of appreciation in recognition of the group’s contribution to the success of the organisation’s massive Social Solidarity Food Drive, held in Parkhaven, Kempton Park, in September.

The forum’s food drive has been described as a huge success as it collected over 700 tonnes of much-needed food to support thousands of people and animals amid the pandemic.
National president of the Portuguese Forum of South Africa Manny Ferreirinha, who is a Benoni businessman, explained the forum decided to do something after recognising the enormous need among the poor as a result of the pandemic.

Speaking on behalf of the Portuguese Forum of South Africa, Phillip Allebone pointed out the forum was overwhelmed by the support from dozens of organisations and individuals who came on board to assist.
These supporters included farmers, corporates, industries, motorbike clubs, Caxton Local Media and many others.
Help came in many forms, including donations of food and money.

The event was also attended by top government officials from the province and even further afield, including MMC for Health and Social Development Nomadlozi Nkosi and former Premier of Gauteng Paul Mashatile.
Also in attendance were the council general for Portugal Francisco-Xavier de Meireles Manuel Carvalho and the Portuguese ambassador to South Africa and City of Tshwane administrator Gilberto Martins.
