SAPS destroys 24 901 firearms

According to police spokesperson Col Brenda Muridili, a notice was published in the Government Gazette on June 9, with 24 910 firearms that were intended to be destroyed.

The SAPS has destroyed 24 901 firearms that were confiscated and surrendered to the State between the periods of 2019/20 and 2020/21.

The termination of the firearms took place at Cape Gate Wire and Steel Manufacturers in Vanderbijlpark on July 8.

According to police spokesperson Col Brenda Muridili, a notice was published in the Government Gazette on June 9 of the firearms that were intended to be destroyed.

“These firearms were subjected to IBIS tests and were not linked to a pending firearm application or criminal investigation. As per section 136 (2) of the above mentioned act, interested parties who had a valid claim to the relevant firearms or ammunition were invited to make representations within 21 days after the publication of the notice as to why the identified firearms and ammunitions should not be destroyed.”

Muridili said the SAPS received nine representations that led to the total 24 901 firearms, which included 3 610 rifles, 3 083 shotguns, 17 383 handguns and other parts.

“Melting these firearms ensures the proliferation of firearms is dealt with. The SAPS will continue to detect and remove illegal firearms and ammunition from the streets of South Africa, as they pose a threat to the safety and security of the inhabitants of this country.”
