COVID-19: Oosrand Secondary postpones annual golf day

The event is aimed at raising funds to help supplement the portion the school receives from the government.

Oosrand Secondary’s fund-raising event, which was set to take place on June 27 at the ERPM Golf Course, has been postponed due to the sharp increase in Covid-19 infections across the province.

Instead of cancelling the event, like last year, the event organisers decided that the school’s annual golf day be moved to August 29, as they are hoping that the situation will gradually subside in the next couple of weeks.

“While we know this is disappointing, this is a necessary step to help keep each other safe in these unprecedented times. Our primary concern remains the health and well-being of our golf entrants, their families, school representatives and the broader community of Gauteng including Ekurhuleni,” said the school principal, Peter Arendse.

The initiative offers businesses and individuals the opportunity to sponsor a hole or to bring players to participate in the fund-raiser. Due to the postponement, the committee has decided to refund any golfer or sponsor should they choose to opt-out.
The new event arrangements and refunds will, however, be properly communicated to all parties concerned. For more information, contact Lester on 073 707 6855 or send an email to ruwayne.jooste@gmail.com

“We are looking forward to hosting a great event on the new proposed date above. We’ll keep you posted if anything changes, but please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or concerns,” said one of the committee members, Naidoo Wesley.

“In the meantime, please stay safe and thank you all once again for your continued support.”

Financial objective
The event is aimed at raising funds to help supplement the portion the school receives from the government.

According to the school, Oosrand Secondary is partly funded by the government and every year the gap between this funding and the actual cost to run the school widens. The balance then needs to be raised by external sources and community fund-raising such as the golf day.

The 2020 golf day had to be cancelled due to the lockdown regulations at that time.
This had a major impact on the school and exacerbated the already bad situation as Covid-19 has seen many households lose income, inadvertently affecting the parents’ ability to meet their children’s educational needs.
