City’s nursery saves money through transplanting

In transplanting, timing is very important.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s nurseries have applied the transplanting or replanting procedure over the years on some of its plants and it has proven to save money.

According to the metro, some plants take too long to re-establish themselves, which may lead to constantly buying new ones to decorate municipal building and events. However, transplanting or replanting saves costs.

Transplanting is a critical process for most plants as it allows them to be unearthed, divided and re-planted in a different location to multiply.

Richard Mkhabela, a supervisor at the Boksburg parks nursery, said in transplanting, timing is very important. Preferably, the procedure is conducted bi-annually during autumn for the spring season bloomers and after the summer season.
“Transplanting is best conducted during the coolest time of the day, either early morning or late afternoon. The summer season is the worst season to transplant plants as they would have started to bloom,” said Mkhabela.
“We have been transplanting since 2017 for most of the plants in our nurseries and we have cut the costs of buying new plants that we use for decorating municipal buildings and official ceremonies,” Mkhabela added.

Mkhabela further pointed out that for guaranteed positive results of transplanting, one needs to ensure that the newly transplanted plants are watered daily, trimmed and kept in a shaded area with a balanced room temperature.
