Residents clean up Van Dyk Park

The volunteers are planning more clean-up sessions and invited the public to become involved.

A handful of residents rolled up their sleeves to clean up parts of Van Dyk Park on May 23.

From as early as 8am, the residents worked around the clock to sweep streets and pick up litter in the vicinity of Barry Marais Road, Besembos and Keurboom streets. The volunteers also cleaned a few drains in Van Dyk Park.

According to the organisers, Anna Botha and Nthabiseng Mosehle, they want to restore Van Dyk Park to its former glory.

“We just want to get our neighbourhood clean, as the municipality is struggling to do it. We focused on the entrance of Van Dyk Park is close to the highway and mall; hence, we want it to look neat. It doesn’t look too bad inside, but the entrance of Van Dyk Park is an eyesore,” the 70-year-old Botha explained.

Thabo Phasha, Zuma Saulos, Levy Makoti, Nthabiseng Mosehle and Anna Botha helped to clean Van Dyk Park.

She highlighted the volunteers are planning more clean-up sessions in the future and urged community members to join them.

“Extra hands are always welcome. We’ll also appreciate it if organisations or companies can assist us. If they can’t attend the clean-up sessions themselves, they can perhaps pay people to clean on their behalf,” Botha added.
