Toughlove SA has partnered with NOWWHAT app to deliver informative self-esteem workshops to the community of East Rand every Saturday at the BreakThru Church in Parkdene, from 8am to 11am.

According to Toughlove board chairperson Chantal Grotto, in today’s world, perception and the reception therein can either make or break a person.

“This directly has a knock-on effect on society and the emotional wellbeing of a person. Perception runs parallel to self-esteem. Self-esteem influences one’s emotional, cognitive and behavioural responses under various situations.
“In decision making, self-esteem is an individual’s evaluation of his or her decision-making capability in a given situation and that confidence, or lack of it, may affect decisions made,” she said.

Why self-esteem is important?
According to Grotto, self-esteem impacts your decision-making process, your relationships, your emotional health and your overall wellbeing. It also influences motivation as people with a healthy, positive view of themselves understand their potential and may feel inspired to take on new challenges.

“We live in a world where there is an epidemic of low self-esteem. It affects almost every aspect of our lives, from how we think about ourselves to the way we think about or react to life’s situations.
“When negative influences and thoughts are prevalent, generated either from within ourselves or through others, it adversely affects the way we feel about ourselves. It also affects the experiences we have in our lives.”

Grotto said over a period, this can lead to low self-esteem, which can reduce the quality of a person’s life in many different ways.

“Unchecked, low self-esteem may even lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, sometimes with tragic results,” she said.

ToughLove SA is a nationwide support group consisting of individuals who offer guidance and advice to families and individuals in crisis.
