EMPD pounce on alleged lawbreakers

A man driving a Kawasaki motorcycle was stopped and handcuffed for allegedley clocking 220km/h in a 10km/h zone.

On May 5 in the Boksburg, Benoni and Brakpan areas during crime-prevention operations, the EMPD Anti-High Speed, Overload Control and Equestrian units’ officers arrested several suspects, impounded a vehicle and confiscated a driver’s licence.

BOKSBURG: At 10am in the Boksburg area, EMPD Equestrian Unit officers patrolling the N12 freeway stopped a Toyota Quantum with two Mozambiqan nationals towing and transporting trailers in the westbound direction at the Rondebult off-ramp,” Mokheseng said.
“On closer inspection, officers noticed the driver had a passport and the driver’s licence documents with his photos, but both names and surnames were different from his.
“The motorist faces charges of forgery and was arrested and taken to the Boksburg North Police Station,” said EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.”

BENONI: Meanwhile, in Benoni, a hatchback, allegedley registered and licensed unlawfully, was impounded and the driver’s  counterfeit driver’s licence confiscated.

“While on foot patrol at 8.30am on Elston Avenue in Benoni and monitoring long queues at the Sassa building, EMPD Overload Control Unit officers noticed a parked silver BMW 1 series with a faded colour licence disc displayed on the front windscreen.
“The vehicle with a missing VIN was tested and the results were ‘no history found’.
“As officers were verifying, two pedestrians approached and alleged the vehicle belongs to them and was recently purchased in Durban for R80 000.
“After thorough investigation, the BMW was impounded because it originated from Germany and was registered in Japan before it was shipped to Durban without official and necessary supporting documents.
“Somehow in Durban it was registered and licensed unlawfully because the engine number displayed on the licence disc doesn’t correspond with the engraved number on the engine block.
“SAPS officers, under the Vehicle Theft Unit, are investigating further,” explained Mokheseng.

BRAKPAN: In Brakpan on the R23 road near Main Street, which is zoned 100km/h, four drivers were stopped and taken to Brakpan Police Station for speeding.
“At 9.26am, a man driving a Kawasaki motorcycle was stopped and handcuffed for clocking 220km/h instead of 100, alleging he is a businessman rushing to open his shop,” Mokheseng said.
“Three other offenders driving an SUV and a light delivery vehicle were arrested for registering 139, 143 and 155km/h respectively, citing various reasons.
“The arrested foursome, facing charges of reckless and negligent driving, was taken to the Brakpan Police Station.”
