Bakkies, trucks on hijackers’ hit list in Boksburg

Recent reports indicate bakkies are the most hijacked vehicles, followed by trucks laden with valuable goods.

The Boksburg police warned motorists that their latest reports reveal that off-road and 4×4 bakkies and trucks are the most targeted vehicles by hijackers and thieves in Boksburg areas.

“Our recent reports indicate bakkies are the most hijacked vehicles, followed by trucks laden with valuable goods.
“A number of these types of vehicles had been hijacked in our precinct, and we are also aware of many other similar cases reported in our neighbouring police precincts. Bakkies on hijackers’ hit list include Ford Rangers, Toyota Hilux, and others.
“This is, however, not to suggest people driving in other types of cars should not take extra caution. We still have several cases where criminals are aiming for light motor vehicles,” said Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sgt Ntsako Ledwaba.

The police pointed out they have also noted a trend in the theft of vehicle batteries from trucks while parked in roadside parking and business premises.

Motorists, in particular bakkie and truck drivers, are advised to be extra cautious when driving in the area, especially at night or during the wee hours.

“If you notice you are being followed or pulled over by suspicious-looking people in police uniform or vehicle, call your nearest police station or 10111. We had several cases where truck drivers said they were pulled over by people resembling police officers and were hijacked thereupon,” explained Ledwaba.
