Man injured after being hit by debris from cash van during CIT heist

The police are still searching for the group of men who were involved in the robbery.

A 38-year-old man from Thembisa suffered injuries after being struck by debris from the G4S cash van when it was blown up by the gang of robbers.

In a telephonic interview with the Advertiser on March 31, the man said he was in an ICU ward at a local hospital and was being treated for injuries to his lungs and liver.

He was in the yard at his workplace, located next to the robbery scene in Van Dyk Road, when he saw pieces of debris from the blown-up vehicle coming his way.

He tried to get out of harm’s way, but it was too late.

“Pieces of the wreckage hit me on my back and I fell to the ground,” he recalled.

“Everything went black; I was knocked unconcious. After regaining consciousness, I heard gunshots. I managed to get up and ran to the workshop. I was bleeding profusely. After receiving first-aid at my workplace, I was rushed to the Sunward Park Hospital by my employer. X-rays revealed that my lungs and liver had been damaged. My body was in severe pain, and I was unable to do anything without help.”

The injured man was discharged on the same day. However, the following day, he started coughing up blood and was struggling to breathe.

He was again rushed to hospital and admitted to ICU. The victim said he is still in shock as he never expected something like this to happen to him.

He also pointed out that his two children are also still in shock and finding it hard to cope after receiving the news of the injuries he sustained as a result of the CIT robbery taking place nearby.

Meanwhile, the police are still searching for the group of men who were involved in the robbery.
