Clearer picture emerges of crash that killed Boksburg family

The family had moved to Impala Park about a year ago from Kriel.

More details about the fatal accident which claimed the lives of an Impala Park family of four on April 1 have come to light in an article published by our sister newspaper Zululand Observer yesterday (April 5).

Clive (32), Claudia (25), Leané (5) and Aiden (4) Janse van Rensburg died on impact when a vehicle hit their Renault Clio head-on on the N2, 160km from their destination, Richards Bay.

They were en route to Richards Bay to visit Claudia’s aunt and had left Kriel, Mpumalanga, at 5.30pm in convoy with her parents and gran.

According to an article by Tamlyn Jolly, published on the Zululand Observer’s website, the accident happened at about 9pm near the Baobab truck stop on the national highway.

It also stated the family of the deceased has appointed Investipol Independent Crash Investigation Unit to look into the accident.

Claudia’s sister Natasha Wright, who lives in Kriel, confirmed the published details about the accident were accurate.

According to Investipol, the Ford Ranger of their parents was in front, towing a jeep on an A-frame, and Claudia’s family were behind them.

A Land Cruiser travelling in the opposite direction (northbound), reportedly collided with the Ranger, just clipping its right-hand side, causing slight damage to its rearview mirror and scratching the side of the vehicle.

The Land Cruiser then collided with the right-hand side of the Jeep that was being towed, causing the tow hitch to be sheared off and the Jeep to roll over onto its side. The Land Cruiser then collided head-on into the Clio, causing the Clio to leave the road and come to a halt several metres into the grassy area at the roadside.

The impact also caused the Land Cruiser to roll onto its side, and it came to a rest on the roadway.

The Janse van Rensburg family were all killed on impact.

Anyone who has any information, or may have witnessed the collision or have any photographs of the scene, is urged to contact Shaun McGuone of Investipol, by phone or WhatsApp on 082 5350111 (all hours) or email crash@investipol.co.za.

The exact cause of the accident will also be the subject of a police investigation.

According to Wright, the bodies will be transported to Mpumalanga today “if all goes well at the morgue”, however, this is only speculation and could change.

“We have not set a specific date for the funerals yet as it is dependent on whether the bodies will be transported to Mpumalanga today,” Wright said.
