Pick n Pay Towers shares how it survived the Covid-19 crisis

Over the past 12 months, the store was able to stay open and trade every day without any closures due to Covid-19 positive cases.

As South Africa marks a year since the country entered its Covid-19 lockdown, the family-owned Pick and Pay Towers shared its journey of overcoming the never-ending series of disruptions caused by the pandemic.

Jimmy Rangousis and his son, Antoni, had just acquired ownership of the Pick and Pay store at Towers when President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a lockdown a few weeks after the coronavirus reached our shores.
The owners said they put several measures in place to protect both staff and customers against the invisible enemy.

“Before lockdown, we started sanitising and disinfecting daily, and we made it our mission to keep both our workers and customers safe with strict Covid-19 safety protocols in our premises.
“Before the lockdown, we also started coming up with drive-thru shopping, which was very popular and convenient for many shoppers. Shoppers would just stop in designated parking bays to collect their pre-shopped groceries,” said Jimmy.

Over the past 12 months, the store was able to stay open and trade every day without any closures due to Covid-19 positive cases. The owners attributed this to being proactive in implementing safety protocols and adhering to all the safety measures recommended by experts.

Despite a year full of uncertainties, the business continued to have weekly specials for its customers.
“Above all, we would like to thank the community and customers for standing by their store and we will continue to render the best service possible and keep our premises one of the safest stores to shop in,” said Jimmy.
