Expired contract leads to closure of Rooikraal landfill site

The City is currently in the process of appointing service providers temporarily through Section 36

The Ekurhuleni metro has confirmed that the Rooikraal landfill site is temporarily closed because the service provider’s contract had come to an end on December 31.

According to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the City’s landfill sites are operated and maintained by service providers on behalf of the City.
“The closure of the site came after the application for the appointment of the new service providers was not awarded. The City is currently in the process of appointing service providers temporarily through Section 36 until a new contract can be awarded through an open tender system,” said Dlamini.

The Section 36 process is anticipated to be concluded in a month.
Meanwhile, residents complained that they were not made aware of the closure until they were turned away and prevented from dumping their waste in the facility.
Surprised
Pieter Lange told the Advertiser that he recently went to the site in question to dump some building rubble, and to his surprise, he found that the facility was non-operational.
“The workers, who were sitting under a rondavel at the front gate, told me to dump the rubble in the veld across the dumping site. I, however, didn’t think that was a good idea, especially after driving six kilometres to do the right thing.
“I was chased away by a very angry lady and was told to go and dump my building rubble in a veld somewhere, not at her dumpster.
“The problem is that the main dumping sites are closed, and the smaller ones do not take any building rubble, and no one can tell you what to do.
“Apparently there is a dispute between the municipality and the contractor of the main dumping sites,” said Lange.
