Matric results spark excitement for local learners

The most anticipated day for matric results finally came for Grade 12 learners across the country following a very tough year due to the coronavirus pandemic

Boksburg High School

Boksburg High School scooped 96.78 per cent, highlighting a drop of 2.82 per cent from last year’s 99.6 per cent.

A total of 280 learners sat for their final NSC examinations, 191 learners achieved bachelor passes while 75 learners passed with diploma passes. The school produced an impressive 221 distinctions compared to 2019’s 133 distinctions.

Although the school’s pass rate shows a slight decrease from 2019’s result, the newly appointed principal, Enock Thango, received the results with excitement.

“The decline is insignificant if we consider the challenges that resulted from the Covid-19 pandemic. Our results show resilience from the school because, despite the difficult period, we still managed to produce a high pass rate.

Boksburg High School’s excited learners are (from left) Michael Pombo, Chanice Dube and Maria Munaki.

“We thank Evelyn Haahjem, former acting principal, for steering the school during the storms. We also thank the staff for guiding the learners to excel,” Thango said.

The school had a drive-thru where learners collected their results while in their parents’ cars.
The former Grade 12 learners couldn’t contain their excitement when they received their results.

Michael Pombo said: “Looking back at last year, it was a difficult year because of the three months that we had to stay at home and study online. When we came back to school we now had to wear masks and social distance. I made it because I belief in myself and the support that I received from my family.”

Seponono Phutsane was delighted to receive her bachelor pass matric result.

Pombo will this year pursue a coaching science degree at a varsity.

Another learner, Chanice Dube, said she was content with her results. “The year 2019 was not an easy year because we had to work hard and be determined during the challenges that we faced. I had to rely on myself because we couldn’t rely on teachers and study groups because most of the times, we were at home,” Dube said.

Dube said she hopes to study medicine at the University of Johannesburg or Wits University.
One of the parents, Sweetness Masina, couldn’t hold back tears of joy when she saw her son’s final marks.
“I knew that my son, Bonginkosi Khunga, would pass matric but I didn’t think he would achieve such great marks. I am lost for words. I’m so happy,” she said.

Masina said during the national lockdown, she resorted to buying her son a Wi-Fi router so that he could study online.
