Dawn Park Primary receives much-needed desks

New desks will assist ECD centres to ensure that young learners are kept at least one metre apart during the covid-19 pandemic

All thanks to Danone, Grade R learners at Dawn Park Primary School have started their academic year on a good note following the donation of 60 new school desks made out of recycled yoghurt cups.

The donation is part of the company’s Day One campaign, focusing on the first day back at school.

Danone, which has a manufacturing facility in Boksburg, has taken on the challenge to provide Covid-19-compliant desks to seven early childhood development (ECD) centres, five of which are based in Ekurhuleni.

Some of the schools that have already benefitted from this initiative include Lefa La Gago Creche, Fairyland Creche, Urban Ruins Preschool and Little Lamb Pre-School.

According to Leanne Kiezer, Danone’s corporate affairs manager and project manager, they decided to donate to the school after identifying a need and because the school was within the community that they serve.

“Since January we have reached out to several schools in and around Boksburg. Dawn Park Primary School is our seventh school that we’ve extended our support to. We have converted waste into resources to making these desks so that learners can have their own space while learning. These desks will also assist to adequately space out children for social distancing purposes. This campaign also helps us fulfil our commitment of no waste to landfill by 2030,” Kiezer said.

The desks are designed under the supervision of an occupational therapist for children aged four to six and are not only a safe place to learn how to read and write, but also to eat as well.

Dawn Park Primary School principal Vusi Motaung expressed gratitude for the donation received.

“We would like to thank Danone for the donation. As a school we are privileged to have good relations with Pick n Pay because they were the ones who roped in Danone to sponsor us with these new desks,” Motaung said.
