Local teacher and author supports World Read Aloud Day

Reading helps with holistic brain development in children

Dawn Park Primary School teacher Grushcenka Ruiters joined millions of mothers, caregivers and educators around the world in celebrating World Read Aloud Day yesterday (February 3).

Ruiters who is the author of a book entitled, Mommy’s Gone and Daddy’s Forever, highlights the importance of reading to children.

“I believe reading to your child is important because it teaches them different sounds, different words and also develops and expands their vocabulary. It helps with memory and ignites the child’s imagination and curiosity.
“It also helps with holistic brain development and teaches a child the events of life and how to deal with their emotions,” Ruiters said.

The Grade R teacher, who is a proud mother of two boys, Tristan (3) and Teigen (2), said she started reading to them at an early age.

“The sooner you start reading to your children the better. Knowledge is power and the more you read to them, the more knowledge they acquire,” she added.

The young mother is at the moment focusing more on teaching her two boys numbers, phonics and the alphabet.

“Songs and rhymes also play a pivotal role in their vocabulary development at this age,” Ruiters said

Her book, which was released in 2017, is about a family which loses their father. The book is available on Amazon.
