Four men arrested, gun seized after shootout with police

The four were charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and reckless and negligent driving

Four suspicious men were arrested following a high-speed car chase and shootout with police along Elsburg Road on January 31.
According to Reiger Park police spokesperson Sgt Mashudu Phathela, police received information from concerned residents who spotted the foursome’s blue Golf, with foreign registration number, roaming around the streets of Ramaphosa.

Police followed up on information with regards to the suspects reportedly carrying guns. They then spotted the vehicle used by the suspects at the intersection of Elsburg and Archie roads in Ramaphosa.

“Our members tried to pull over the suspects’ car, and blocked it with the state van. But its occupants opened fire on officers, who after being attacked, returned fire and a shootout ensued between the suspects and police.
“The suspects’ car rammed into our van and drove off towards Voortrekker Street, in Elsburg. The men then abandoned their vehicle and tried to flee on foot before they were all caught and placed under arrest,” explained Phathela.

Police said one firearm and live ammunition were found in the suspects’ possession.
Phathela confirmed that one of the suspects was injured in the hand. The police vehicle was damaged in the incident, but none of the officers were injured in the shootout.

The four were charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and reckless and negligent driving. They are all expected to appear in court soon.
