Walking to honour cancer fighters, survivors and victims

Event organisers donned sky blue shirts with shades of pink – colours which accommodate both male and female cancer fighters, survivors and victims

Cansa East Rand, in partnership with Curves Beyers Park, hosted a family fun walk to raise funds and awareness about cancer at Woodlands International College on December 13.

“We were walking in honour of fighters, survivors and victims,” said Cansa East Rand fund-raising coordinator Angelique Brits.

Cansa East Rand raises funds to sustain the organisation, facilitate its cancer research labs and to keep its 11 care homes, which are spread across the country, running.

At the homes, cancer victims are transported to and from the hospital and are offered three meals per day, to list a few of its services. Victims stay at the homes for six weeks at a time.

Event organisers, including Brits, donned sky blue shirts with shades of pink – colours which accommodate both male and female cancer fighters, survivors and victims.

This was Cansa East Rand’s third attempt to host the event and it was a case of third time lucky after recent rain showers spoiled its first two attempts.

The initial date was November 22.

As a result, the turnout did not meet expectations, according to Brits, but that did not prevent the walk from being a success – a success that all parties involved played a part in.

Brits extended an exclusive mention to Woodlands, which allowed CER to use its fields for the event for free – a gesture followed by Live Music Productions which offered its sound system and music also for free.

Security service Legendary Guardians Exclusive Protection took care of maintaining security and preventing potential criminal activity during the walk.
