Workshop tackles challenges found in marriages

The workshop was aimed at encouraging couples to invest in their relationships and not remain silent in abusive relationships

Family and Marriage Society of South Africa (Famsa) East Rand hosted an empowerment workshop on December 8 at Rock Church, Ramaphosa.

Attendees were taught about domestic violence, the importance of pre-marital counselling, marriage enrichment and many more.

One of the speakers, Isabella Malatsi, shared there are different types of abuse: physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

“Some of the effects of domestic violence include anxiety, hopelessness, depression, anger, ongoing stress and fatigue. It is important to report domestic abuse-related matters to the police or to the court so the perpetrator can be served with a protection order for your safety and your children’s,” Malatsi said.

She shared that openness and honesty in relationships were key to having a long-lasting relationship.

Sgt Lufuno Mudzulif of the Reiger Park SAPS advised women not to withdraw cases of abuse once they’ve opened them at the police station, but to let the law take its course against perpetrators.
