Senior citizens invited to join Scribante Golden Walkers Athletic Club

Residents of the centre started the club to improve their fitness levels

A few Andries Scribante Haven residents recently established the Scribante Golden Walkers Athletic Club, and community members are invited to join the walking club.
According to the chairperson of the walking club, Donovan Coopman, anybody over 60 years is welcome to join the club.
Members of the walking club walk about three kilometres in areas such as Cason Road and Champion Street, Boksburg North, on Mondays and Thursdays at 4pm.
Coopman explained that the main objective of the residents’ initiative is to help the senior citizens improve their fitness levels.
“Sometimes, senior citizens are inactive as they stay in their apartments most of the day; hence, we decided to start a walking club.
“We want to show the world that older people can also be active and look after their health. Additionally, members have the opportunity to interact with each other and socialise while walking,” said the chairperson.
The other committee members of the club are Marie Luus (secretary), Marietjie Gouws (treasurer), Daphney Thomas and Marjorie Brooks.

Moreover, Coopman shared that the club is planning a trip to Rietvlei, Alberton, on December 14, adding they are in need of the public’s support to make it a reality.
This is how you can help:
• A 22-seater bus
• Water bottles
• Hats and sunscreen
• Monetary donations
Club members started several fund-raising initiatives for the trip:
• Club members are selling raffle tickets for R15 each for Marietjie Gouws’s hand-made 3D painting.
• The chairperson is selling coconut-covered koeksisters. Kerr’s Funeral Undertakers is already supporting the initiative.
• Committee members Brooks and Thomas are selling milk tarts.
• Jan Hermaans and Wilfred Campbell from the walking club are embarking on a roti and curry run. Stevies Butchery in Reiger Park is supporting them.
