The five suspects in the murder of former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa re-appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court amid tight security on November 27.
The matter was postponed for further investigation, with the suspects expected to make their third appearance on March 5.
Muzikawulahlelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokosizi Maphisa and Sifisokuhle Ntuli face charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
They were charged for Meyiwa’s killing in October, exactly six years to the date after the Bafana Bafana star was shot dead at the home of his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, in Vosloorus.
During their first appearance late last month, the five refused to enter the dock as they strongly maintained their innocence.
This time, they insisted on addressing the court, much to the irritation of the magistrate, who responded by saying the proceedings were not a press conference and added they were risking being in contempt of court.
However, before the magistrate could finally call the suspects to order, accused number three, Mncube, who spoke over the magistrate, said they are being used as scapegoats while Chicco Twala’s son, Longwe, is a free man.
Senzo’s siblings, Sifiso, Nhlanhla and Zama, as well as AfriForum members, were in court. AfriForum’s Gerrie Nel shared a feeling of disappointment with Meyiwa’s siblings that the person they believe to be the mastermind
was not revealed or in court. He said: “What I can reveal is that more evidence has emerged linking the mastermind to the matter, which I think is positive.”
Meyiwa was 30 at the time of his death on October 26, 2014.
