Latest crime stats revealed by Police Minister

Alcohol abuse is the driving force behind thousands of reported rape and murder cases

A total of 8 922 cases of rape were reported to the police across the country during the months of July, August and September.

This was revealed by the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele on November 13 during a media briefing in Pretoria where he outlined the crime statistics for the second quarter of 2020/21.

The statistics cover the period of July 1 to September 30.

Cele said a sample of 5 168 rape dockets revealed that 3 578 persons were raped in their homes or at the homes of their perpetrators while others were raped in public spaces.

“Five-thousand one-hundred and seven people were murdered in South Africa and from a sample of 4 290 murder dockets, analysis revealed that 1 992 of the murders occurred in public spaces such as beaches, parks, streets or open fields. Over 900 people were killed in their homes or at the homes of the killers. Alarmingly, arguments and misunderstandings remain the causes,” Cele said.

Cele said the consumption and abuse of alcohol was a contributing factor for murder, GBV and rape cases recorded in the second quarter.

He said 829 were assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm cases, 747 rape cases and 179 attempted murders.

“Over a thousand incidences of murder, attempted murder, rape and assault took place outside or inside liquor outlets. These figures make it impossible to deny the effects of alcohol abuse,” Cele said.

Home invasion cases have increased by 8.5 per cent while cases of business robberies have declined.

Cele said it was encouraging to see the third leg of the trio crimes, hijacking, showing a decrease of 1.6 per cent.

The Minister of Police further used the opportunity to thank the men and women in blue uniform who continued to serve the people of this country with honour and diligence throughout the pandemic.
