Memorial ride: Janine and Frans

The tragic loss of these two cyclist again highlights the dangers cyclists face daily on South African roads.

On November 29, a memorial ride will be held in loving memory of Janine Hopkins and Frans Duys.

Departure will take place from ‘The Workshop’ 17, 6th Street (corner 5th Avenue) in Northmead at 6am.

On Saturday, November 29 last year, Janine and Frans were killed by a taxi driver who allegedly skipped a red traffic light in Isando.

Recently deceased Janine Hopkins (Left) and Frans Duys.

Janine was declared dead at the scene and Frans died on-route to hospital.

The tragic loss of these cyclists again highlights the dangers cyclists face daily on South African roads.

The distance traveling will be 11km to 22km (to be confirmed).

“We are doing the route that the TDF (Tour de Franks) group used to ride every weekday and it was also Frankies favorite loop,” explained Dawn Burnett, partner to recently deceased, Janine Hopkins.

“We are calling the ride the Silver Fox Classic, which is the name given to Janine and Frans as tandem cyclists.

They were known as the silver foxes.

“The date (November 29) is also of meaning because if you add up the numbers 2 and 9 it gives the number 11 which is known as the angels number in the spirit world.”
