Police vowed to squeeze the space for criminals in Ekurhuleni

“Criminals, we are warning you. We are here and we are going to reclaim this space and hand it back to the citizens of Boksburg.” – Gauteng police commissioner

SAPS anti-crime operation Okae Molao was on October 29 rolled out in different parts of Boksburg, where robbery and drugs hot spots in particular were targeted.
The Thursday morning operation was led by Gauteng police commissioner Lt-Gen Elias Mawela alongside Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner of detective services Maj-Gen Vincent Leshabane, and several other top cops in the district.

The blitz kicked off at 6am with a briefing held at Fly Inn Lodge & Conference Centre in Boksburg North, where members were split into groups before the team, consisting of SAPS and EMPD members, Gauteng Traffic Department, CPF and local security companies, were deployed to different areas in the city.
The teams conducted road blocks and raided known crime hot spots, including the Boksburg CBD and taverns in Angelo informal settlement.

At the vehicle checkpoint manned at the intersection of Commissioner Street and van Dyk Road, officers made sure the vehicles they pulled off were searched thoroughly for any illicit goods or weapons.

Roadblocks and check points were manned at the intersection of Rondebult and Rietfontein roads, intersection of Commissioner Street and van Dyk Road, and Atlas Road, near the N12.
Speaking at the event, Mawela said the team is ready to fight the battle against criminals and promised that residents will see more officers patrolling neighbourhoods in a bid to curb crime.

Referencing Angelo informal settlement in particular, Mawela said in such congested areas without narrow passages and streets, residents will see more police on foot, which will allow officers to interact with members of the community and encourage them to report crime, and avoid committing crime.
“Criminals, we are warning you. We are here and we are going to reclaim this space and hand it back to the citizens of this place. What we are doing here in Ekurhuleni will be equally done in other districts,” he said.
