Beading and sewing classes now offered at the Creative Arts Centre

Ntibane said her aim with the classes is to help people improve their skills

The Advertiser visited the Creative Arts Centre at 44 Market Street on October 21 to get clarity about the future of the centre.

During the visit, dressmaker and businesswoman Violet Ntibane explained arts and craft classes (modern and traditional beadwork and sewing) are now offered at the Creative Art Centre’s penguin room, where artist Barry de Villiers gave painting lessons before he died earlier this year.

Ntibane said she is managing the classes, adding she would like to empower others through the classes by helping them to develop skills that help to put bread on the table.

“I’m excited about the future of the craft centre and would like to invite the community to join the classes. Everybody is welcome. I would also like to see younger people attend the classes as indigenous Ndebele, Xhosa and Zulu women can teach people about culture. I also want to display traditional attire at the centre for tourists to view,” she explained.

The classes will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8.30am till 2.30pm and appointments can be made on Saturdays. All Covid-19 measures are in place to curb the spread of the virus. Hence, there are only six people allowed per class.

Contact Violet on 083 741 9448 for more information.

The Creative Arts Centre is allegedly part of the Ekurhuleni Department of Sports, Arts and Culture. The Advertiser is awaiting comment from the metro.
