The Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly stirred uncertainty and intense pandemonium among many.
For adults, navigating through a myriad of information to stay informed and educated is a challenge in itself, but what about children who are trying to understand how this new world works?
To date, many children are going through mixed emotions, trying to comprehend what the world is currently facing due to Covid-19.
Enter Cory In The Universe, a children’s novel that will be available in all 11 official languages and aims to help children between the ages of nine and 15 gain a better understanding of the coronavirus.
The novel was co-authored by former Miss South Africa and Honours in Curriculum graduate Ntandoyenkosi Kunene and PhD candidate and lecturer Thokozane Dyosini.
The pair, who are both qualified educators, partnered with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, with the intention of making reading and entertainment a reality in South Africa.

Cory In The Universe places value on the importance of the characters and their experiences through various aspects of philosophy for children and their stories will live on beyond the pandemic.
“We see the need to use storytelling through diversity, inclusivity and representation as a means to take the children of South Africa through this rather difficult time that is Covid-19,” stated Kunene and Dyosini.
The pair added that the book will provide opportunities for incidental learning.
The department’s minister, Nathi Mthethwa, said the novel is one that speaks to the heart of children and also highlights many social issues that plague society.
This book will serve as a form of edutainment by bringing educational value through the use of entertainment to start meaningful conversations between children, teachers, parents and guardians.
The novel is set for a virtual launch on social media today (September 8) at 3.30pm.
