Women’s Month: Ekurhuleni honours struggle stalwart Bertha Gxowa

Gxowa was among the women who led the historic women’s march to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, in protest against the extension of pass laws to women

The late anti-apartheid and women’s rights activist Bertha Gxowa was recently celebrated by the Ekurhuleni metro for her selfless contributions towards socio economic empowerment of women.

Bertha Gxowa Hospital, based in Germiston, is named after her.
In commemoration of her life, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at Thomas Nkobi Memorial.

During the ceremony, Gxowa was described as a woman of integrity and a people’s person.

MMC for Health and Social Development Nomadlozi Nkosi, who gave a keynote address, encouraged women to stand up and say enough is enough to violence against women and children.

Gxowa was born in Germiston and died at the age of 76 in November 2010.
