Ekurhuleni taverns, pubs flout Covid-19 rules

Of the 102 pubs visited by the police in the city, only nine were compliant with the stipulated Covid-19 regulations

As part of the weekend joint operation by members of the EMPD and SAPS, officers arrested a total of 265 suspects for various crimes, including drunk driving, possession and dealing in narcotics and possession of suspected stolen property.

According to EMPD spokesperson, Kobeli Mokheseng, the operation which kicked-off on Friday, August 28, and ran until August 30 in Ekurhuleni, saw officers carrying out roving roadblocks in different parts of the city, where a total of 245 intoxicated motorists between the ages of 20 and 59 were arrested.

Additionally, officers conducted visits to pubs to check if they were abiding by the Covid-19 regulations.

“Out of 102 pubs visited, only nine complied with the Disaster Management Act. The traders disregarded the Covid-19 rules, including keeping the number of patrons under 50, closing at 10pm, making sanitisers available, displaying control books, and scanning visitors.

“For now, the offenders got away with a strong tongue lashing from law enforcers,” said Mokheseng.

During the operation, officers also recovered eight abandoned reported stolen/hijacked motor vehicles in Boksburg, Germiston and Katlehong areas. They were all impounded to Van Ryn’s Deep in Benoni (SAPS yard) for safekeeping.

The areas visited during the operation included Actonville, Benoni, Daveyton, Duduza, Etwatwa, Springs, Tsakane Kempton Park, Thembisa, Clayville and Olifantsfontein, Alberton, Germiston, Katlehong and Boksburg.

“All detainees facing charges of malicious damage to property, possession of suspected stolen property, driving while intoxicated/while under the influence of alcohol, possession and dealing in narcotics, were escorted to their respective police stations, and they are expected to appear, at relevant Magistrate’s Court/s soon.”
