Open manhole an accident waiting to happen

Pedestrians, children and cyclists are particularly vulnerable to getting hurt when this open manhole is not visible after sunset, the resident said

A Sunward Park resident believes her complaints about a dangerous open manhole on the corner of Tosca and Bellini Streets have fallen on deaf ears.

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, explained the manhole has been without a cover since the beginning of the year. According to her, the issue was reported to the metro on numerous occasions without any success.

“I contacted the Ekurhuleni metro’s call centre for the first time on February 5 to report the open manhole. We didn’t receive any response. It doesn’t seem like the metro is doing anything to cover the manhole,” the resident said.

She pointed out the manhole is a hazard to children walking on the road. “My biggest concern is the safety of community members.

During the day one can easily spot the open manhole and manoeuvre your way around it. However, as soon as the sun sets, you can’t see the manhole at all. It poses a danger to motorcyclists.

“This is extremely hazardous as somebody could fall inside the manhole and get hurt. Not too long ago, a child died after falling into such a manhole.

“More and more people are now in streets as the country moved to Level 2 and they should do something about the matter. Children are going to play in the streets, and I definitely don’t want see a child, or anybody else, get hurt,” she added.

The Advertiser has sought comment from the metro.
