DA pushing for matrics to get ID cards

The are calling for mobile units stationed at schools and home affairs offices opening on Saturdays

The DA is calling on the Department of Home Affairs to prioritise ID applications for matriculants in the City of Ekurhuleni. Learners need IDs to sit for their matric final exams.

According to Haseena Ismail MP, DA Benoni constituency political head, the organisation has been inundated with calls from residents in the City requesting urgent assistance with identity documents for matriculants, who have not been able to obtain them due to a crisis at several home affairs offices in the City.

“It is unacceptable that some home affairs offices are offline while others are not accepting ID applications at this stage. Many residents complained that they were told to come back only to find computers offline again,” said Ismail in a statement.

“The DA wants the department to prioritise matriculants by opening offices on Saturdays and setting up mobile units at public and private schools to assist learners with ID documents, which they require in order to write their exams.

“It is unacceptable that home affairs offices in the City of Ekurhuleni are constantly offline. The department should urgently investigate the network downtime at these offices.”

The Department of Home Affairs has not yet responded to queries.
