Run for Mea a huge success

The virtual run for Mea Meyer, the little fighter who is gradually recovering from cerebral meningitis, was successful beyond her parents' expectations.

About 700 people participated in the race on Women’s Day, August 10.

Individuals from all over the country could run, walk, jog or ride a bicycle for five or 10km from any chosen location.

The primary objective of the race was to raise money for Mea’s medical expenses, a new generator (to keep her medical equipment on during a power outage) and renovations to her room (as it is too small for her assistive devices and medical equipment).

Registration fees were R50. However, some community members contributed more towards the initiative.

The 10-year-old girl’s mother, Zandre, said they managed to raise about R119 000.

“Words will never be enough to thank each and every one who contributed to the success of Mea’s fund-raiser. Thank you for being an instrument in God’s hands. The support from the community has been incredible and unexpected. I still can’t believe how many people entered the race and made donations.

“Our target was to raise R132 000, but we’re extremely grateful for the amount of money we raised. We received more money during the virtual run than the previous one,” said her mother.

Mea, who is still battling to speak, also expressed her gratitude towards the runners and donors in video by saying: “Thank you, I love you.”

She highlighted competitors were also eligible for a lucky draw and they announced the winners. Leon Oosthuizen won Asics running shoes and Adriaan Visagie won a hamper.

Zandre explained the first thing they are going to do is to make her vehicle compatible for Mea. They will also begin with the renovations to her room.

The family is still in need of assistance from the community. Anybody who is willing to contribute may contact Zandre on 071 870 0245.
