Covid-19 survivor urges others to take virus seriously

The resident experienced a high temperature and had difficulty breathing and speaking

A 33-year-old Boksburg man has recovered from Covid-19 and has warned people about the reality of the virus and has encouraged people to stay safe.

The man, who asked to remain anonymous due to the fear of victimisation, said before he tested positive for Covid-19 he regarded the virus to be for some people but not for him.

According to him, he went to the doctor in June after he experienced Covid-19 symptoms.

“My temperature was high, I was sweating and I couldn’t breathe nor talk. I would feel dizzy, I would cough severely and I had no appetite. I used to force myself to eat two slices of bread just so that I could take my tablets,” he said.

He said while he was in quarantine for 14 days at his house, he used to drink vitamin C tablets, a cough mixture and he would mix garlic and ginger, lemon and honey.

“For coughing I would create a concoction of ginger and garlic, after that I would cease coughing for few hours. During quarantine, I couldn’t sleep because I feared I would die in my sleep. The frustrating part about quarantine was that I couldn’t see anyone for 14 days, so I had to rely on social media to keep me busy in order to communicate with friends and family,” he said.

The resident said while he was in isolation his family were his pillars of strength.

“Every night they would make a conference call and they would pray for me and encourage me. My colleague also used to assist me with buying groceries and would leave them outside my door.”

Some of the challenges he faced when he went back to work was the stigma attached to testing positive for the virus.

“People were scared to be next to me or be in the same room. They would make comments such as I wasn’t careful enough and would blame me for bringing the virus to our workplace. I urge people to make sure they always have a mask on, sanitise and refrain from social gatherings,” he said.
