Dawn Park Shopping Centre donates much-needed food parcels

A member of the local CPF committee approached management about the circumstances faced by patrollers during this period

The management of Dawn Park Shopping Centre has shown they care by donating food parcels to the Dawn Park CPF members, child-headed and indigent families.

The handover of the food parcels took place on July 31 at the Kingsway Heritage Church in Dawn Park. About 95 beneficiaries went home joyful as they carried the food parcels.

According to Ken Thobosi, who is part of the Dawn Park CPF committee as well as head of Sector Two, which comprises Dawn Park, Groeneweide and Klipportjie, he approached the management and told them about the circumstances faced by patrollers during this period.

“Members from the Dawn Park CPF worked tirelessly since the lockdown was instituted in March to make sure people in public areas adhered to social distancing protocols. They also don’t have a stable income as they are only volunteers, but this did not hinder them from doing their job at 100 per cent,” he said.

Thobosi highlighted that patrollers from Sector Four, which includes areas such as Mapleton and Extension 12, didn’t benefit from the donation because they couldn’t receive the message on time regarding the day of the handover.

“We further extended our mission of mercy to child-headed and indigent families who were also in need of food. The situation in our country is terrible, but we thank people like the management of Dawn Park Shopping Centre who are still able to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable people,” Thobosi said.

Dawn Khaile, manager of the shopping centre, said they understood what the effects of the lockdown had on communities as it has become a struggle for everyone.

“We felt the need to reach out to these beneficiaries because they live in our community and they are our customers. It is our social responsibility to reach out wherever we can,” Khaile said.
