Work underway to install cable which metro says will end power outages in Boksburg

A contractor has been appointed and construction is underway

The Ekurhuleni Energy Department has kept its promise to replace the aged, faulty cable which caused prolonged power outages in large parts of Boksburg last month, leaving thousands of residents without electricity for more than 45 hours.

Affected areas included Van Dyk Park, Sunward Park, Parkrand, Libradene, Farrar Park, Cinderella, Freeway Park, Elsburg, Boksburg Correctional Services, Groeneweide and Klippoortjie.

According to Ward 32 councillor Marius de Vos, work is underway to replace the 5.5km cable from Les Smith Substation to the Parkrand Substation in order to secure uninterrupted energy supply in those areas.

“A contractor has been appointed and construction is underway. They have been working since last week, digging a trench of about two metres deep in order to pull this cable through and bury it with compacted rocks and concrete to prevent cable theft,” said de Vos.

He added that the cable will have an increased load of current.

“I am delighted that the recurring power outages will soon be a problem of the past,” he said. He further suggested that transformers still need to be replaced so that they can blend with the new cable that is currently being installed. According to de Vos the cable will be delivered in the next coming weeks and work will be completed around September.

The Advertiser is awaiting comment from the metro.
