Witkoppie Ridge reservoir work underway

A second reservoir is being built in Witkoppie Ridge to alleviate water shortage in the area

The construction of a second reservoir in Witkoppie Ridge has begun and it’s expected to be completed around January next year.

The Advertiser last year reported that the Ekurhuleni metro was planning to build a second reservoir as part of the metro’s plan to alleviate water shortage in Witkoppie Ridge.

Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, previously said: “The new reservoir is being constructed to meet the new water and sanitation guidelines of providing 36-hour storage in the reservoir supply zone, and also to meet the demands for future developments within the reservoir supply zone.”

Ward 17 Clr Simon Lapping pointed out that the capacity of this reservoir will be about 10 million litres.

The Advertiser recently visited the site and found that contractors were working at the site. Initially, last year October the metro confirmed that a budget of R38-million has been set aside to build the reservoir but while at the site a new budget amount of R47-million was indicated.

Lapping said work had to be halted when the lockdown started in March. “They couldn’t work for about 45 days but when the lockdown restrictions were relaxed they were back at work. It’s still going to take them about six months to finish.

“We are happy that at least the reservoir will alleviate pressure problems in the area and residents won’t run out of water within three hours when there’s an electricity outage,” Laping said.
