More Witfield Park Retirement Village staff, residents test positive for Covid-19

The managing director emphasised there has not a positive case reported within the last few days

Witfield Park Retirement Village Trans 50 has indicated that 14 staff members and 32 patients have now tested positive for Covid-19.

Ruan de Wet, the managing director of the Trans 50 Association, said Covid-19 positive residents with severe symptoms are confined to the village’s Covid-19 unit, while their other residents are confined to rooms and are being monitored.

“Staff who tested positive are self-isolating at home,” de Wet said, adding they haven’t had a new positive case reported in the last few days. “Eight of the 14 staff members should be returning to work if it is safe and they don’t show any symptoms. Fourteen of the residents are also coming out of isolation soon.”

He explained that the retirement village was on lockdown and that all regulations were in place.

“We are adhering to all the lockdown regulations, and we have all the necessary precautionary measures in place. The safety of our staff members and residents remain our top priority. Hence, we’re doing everything in our power to curb the spread of the virus.

“We’re also restricting movement to the main entrance as much as we can. We can’t entirely prohibit independent residents from leaving the village to buy necessities,” he added.

A letter, seen by the Advertiser, also stated that a resident died after being treated in hospital. De Wet could not confirm what caused the death of the elderly resident.
