Support the Post a Can/Sandwich initiative

A group of friends initiated the project in order to assist charity organisations during the pandemic by collecting non-perishable foods

Many charity organisations are going to receive much-needed donations, thanks to the local Post a Can/Sandwich initiative.

One of the organisers, Natalina Da Conceicao, explained that a group of friends initiated the Post a Can/Sandwich project in order to assist charity organisations during the pandemic by collecting non-perishable foods.

The organiser said the group will collect food at Superspar in Rietfontein Road every Saturday between 10 am and 12 noon. Community members can put contributions in the form of non-perishable food, packets of soup and sandwiches with a spread (placed in a bag) inside a red Post a Can bin.

She described their first day on June 27 of collecting food as a success because they were able to donate more than five bags full of groceries to Chubby Chums.

“I would like to thank everyone who made a contribution. We couldn’t have done it without God’s grace and the community’s support. The Square Spar donated groceries and said shoppers can buy a loaf of bread at a discounted price if they present a Post a Can flyer that we’re handing out. Hundreds of children have to go to bed hungry because their parents just don’t have enough money to make ends meet. This pandemic affected many people, and we decided that we wanted to help.”

She emphasised they have the necessary precautionary measures in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

“We adhere to social distancing protocols and have the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE),” she added.

They are going to collect food for Kuselo Child and Youth Care Services on July 4.
