Support staff member at Reiger Park supermarket positive for Covid-19

The entire store was deep cleaned and sanitised by a specialist cleaning company and it safely reopened to customers on Monday afternoon (June 15)

Pick n Pay confirmed that Mario’s Market Pick n Pay in Reiger Park was closed on Sunday, June 14, because a support staff member tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement, the retailer said the staff member in question does not work with customers and had not been at the store since June 11.

“The entire store was deep cleaned and sanitised by a specialist cleaning company and it safely reopened to customers on Monday afternoon (June 15). All staff members who were in close contact with the staff member were sent home to self-quarantine for the requisite period. The remainder of the staff who were not in close contact with the staff member were screened by health practitioners as a precaution,” the statement read.

Pick n Pay highlighted the Department of Health was informed and they liaised closely with health authorities prior to reopening the store customers.

“Should a staff member test positive for coronavirus, we have a clear protocol that our stores follow to the letter each time, and this includes the Market Stores run by independent owners. Our protocol provides that in each instance the staff member?s close contacts must be identified and self-quarantine for the requisite period.

“As a precaution, the remainder of the store staff who were not in close contact with the staff member will be screened by health practitioners. In accordance with the Health Department, we will also temporarily close the store so that an external specialist cleaning team can deep clean and sanitize the entire store. The health and safety of our customers and staff is a top priority. We are cleaning our stores even more rigorously, including sanitising all till points after each transaction, and sanitising our trolleys frequently.

“Our stores have various preventative measures including Perspex screens at all till points and all staff have face masks. Our staff follow strict hygiene rules and practices, including regular hand washing, and hand sanitiser is readily available for all staff and customers in stores. All stores have clear distancing policies, which includes floor markers and asking customers to queue and shop with a trolley so that safe physical distancing can be maintained at all times. Our staff are screened for symptoms before they start work,” the statement concluded.
