Co-founder of Sunward Christian Academy dies

Pastor Jan and Loureth became the founders of Sunward Christian Academy where they could serve their community in Boksburg with a Christian Independent School for biblical-based education

The co-founder and administrator of Sunward Christian Academy (SCA), Elizabeth Loureth van der Westhuizen, died of heart failure on May 24, at the age of 69.

Loureth grew up and lived most of her life in Boksburg. She fulfilled many roles as the wife of Pastor Jan van der Westhuizen, supporting him in his duties at the Word and Life Church in Boksburg for almost 25years while raising their two children.

For a short period of time Loureth worked at Caxton Local Media as sales manager.

According to her son, Leon, the principal of SCA, in 2000, after much deliberation, courage and prayer, Pastor Jan and Loureth became the founders of Sunward Christian Academy where they could serve their community in Boksburg with a Christian Independent School for biblical-based education.

“Their vision was to start a school that will grow in stature and favour with God, adhering to their calling, teaching a child in the ways he should go when he is older, he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6),” Leon said. “Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, their dream has become a reality.”

He added that it was at SCA where Loureth touched hundreds of lives.

“Her passion for Christ was exemplary and formed the cornerstone of the school’s Christian values. My mom wanted to make a difference in each learner’s life and her maternal instincts paved the way for a firm legacy at the school to stand for many years to come,” Leon said.

“She will be remembered for her infectious laughter, generosity and kindness. Not only will the staff and students miss her loving presence in the school, but her passing is also mourned by her two children and six grandchildren.”
