Man sells girlfriend’s car, says it was hijacked by traffic officers

The Boksburg North Police Station commander, Col Khumbulani Mbatha, issued a stern warning to the public about lodging false criminal cases

A 36-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly reporting a fake hijacking on May 25.

According to Boksburg North spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube, the man told the police that he was driving his girlfriend’s car from Benoni to Kempton Park when he was stopped by traffic officers along Jones Road.

He told police the traffic officers held him at gunpoint while searching him and took R3 000 before assaulting him and fleeing in the girlfriend’s car, Ramaube said.

The man further alleged that when he got to the Boksburg North Police Station to open a case, he was told that the incident didn’t happen in their area of policing. He then went to the Norkem Park Police Station and was transferred back to the Boksburg North SAPS.

“However, during a preliminary investigation, led by W/O William van Aswegen, it was discovered that the stolen vehicle was in Benoni. The owner of the premises where the vehicle was found told the police that he bought the car from the 36-year-old man for R5 000,” Ramaube said. “The man was arrested on May 26 and charged with perjury and defeating the ends of justice.”
