Keeping up with council

With N95 masks in short supply, it is vital to save them for our health workers on the frontline.

How to make a mask

Wearing a mask is one of the ways we can protect ourselves from Covid-19 where we catch the small droplets in the air we create when we cough or sneeze.

Cloth masks can be worn and provide some protection.

The Ekurhuleni metro shared these easy steps to make your own cloth mask:

1. Cut three rectangles of material. They should be big enough that the finished mask will go from the top of your nose to the bottom of your chin and from ear to ear.

2. The outer layers should be a non-stretchy cotton, like a pillowcase or denim.

The middle layer should be a polyester fabric.

3. Pleat the three rectangle three times.

Sew the three rectangles together.

4. Attach strings (shoelaces, or long strips of fabric) to each corner.

You will use these to tie the mask at the top and bottom of the head.

The Ekurhuleni metro encourages residents to follow these steps to prevent the infection of Covid-19

The following can provide protection against infection from the coronavirus and many other viruses that are more common in South Africa:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

• If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• Stay at home when you are sick and try and keep a distance from others at home.

• Cover your cough or sneeze with a flexed elbow or a tissue, then throw the tissue in the bin.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

No Mask no ride

The Ekurhuleni metro’s bus services resumed on May 11 and have urged commuters to wear their masks or they will not be allowed into the bus.

Passengers also need to do the following:

• Maintain the 1m social distance

• both in and while queuing for the bus.

• Sanitise hands before boarding.

• A maximum of 45 passengers allowed per bus.

• Only smart cards will be accepted, no cash.
