Andrew Nel has been instated as acting principal until the Gauteng Department of Education appoints a new principal

Summerfields Primary School principal Joe Bantich has decided to hang up his teaching hat after serving as an educator for 38 years.

He is planning to travel around South Africa and Croatia once the coronavirus outbreak dies out.

Bantich, who hails from Croatia, said two things he will miss about the school are the learners and teachers.

“Over the years, I have enjoyed watching the children evolve. I have watched them play sport and participating in cultural activities. The support that I’ve received from the teachers and parents since I came to the school has been amazing,” said Bantich.

The 61-year-old Dalpark resident said he has taught the learners to respect and embrace each other’s diversity.

Bantich has been the principal since 2001.

Before he came to the school, he was a deputy principal at Pinegrove Primary School in Springs, where he also taught mathematics and science.

Some of the changes that he has witnessed over the years at Summerfields Primary School where the extra classes that were built, maintenance of the fields, white boards and computers in all of the classes, revamped library and media centre.

“My message to the learners at the school is that they should continue working hard, respect everyone and enjoy every moment spent in primary school,” said Bantich.

Andrew Nel will be instated as the acting principal until the Gauteng Department of Education appoints a new principal.
