Lettuce feed the hungry! Boksburg farmers plant seeds of hope among city’s needy

Some residents of Andries Scribante are trapped on the top floor due to the lifts that aren’t working and it is not easy for them to go shopping

Ward 32 councillor Marius de Vos expressed his appreciation to the Parkrand Manor Feeding Scheme that collaborated with a group of farmers in the Rondebult area to distribute vegetables among the needy in Boksburg.\

On Workers’ Day, a group of residents from the feeding scheme gave residents from Andries Scribante Haven and informal settlements about 100 vegetable parcels and 50 packets of mealie meal.
De Vos said that Plantation Farms, Plantation Farm Stall, Roxana Fruit Market, De Freitas Farms, Costa Farms, Goncalves Farms and Rebelo Agricultural Group were among those who made contributions.

“Some people at Andries Scribante are trapped during the pandemic on the top floor due to the lifts that aren’t working. It’s not an easy task for them to go to the store to buy essentials such as food. This is why these type of donations help them a lot. People are still waiting for food parcels from Ekurhuleni metro and the Department of Social Development so we had to take action to bring relief to the needy in the ward,” explained the ward councillor.

He highlighted that the farmers will regularly assist. Secretary of the feeding scheme, who wished to remain anonymous, said they are happy to make a difference in the community, adding that they have been blessed out of their socks with donations.
Susan Visser, committee member of Andries Scribante Haven, thanked the Good Samaritans on behalf of the centre.
“We are extremely grateful for their contribution. It really means a lot to the people of Andries Scribante,” she said.
