Sevens All Stars player bitten by spider while in quarantine in Boksburg

When the Advertiser contacted his father, du Preez senior said that his son’s recovery was progressing well

South African Sevens All Stars rugby player Ruaan du Preez was recently recovering at the Union Netcare Hospital in Alberton following a successful operation to treat a spider bite.

Du Preez (23) was at the Birchwood Hospital in Boksburg when he contacted his father, Werner, and complained about discomfort on his right wrist.

The player landed back in the country in the early hours of April 19 from Germany, where he plies his trade for Leipzig Rugby Club. He was due to stay at the hotel in quarantine for 14 days as a precautionary measure amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

When the Advertiser contacted his father, du Preez senior said that his son’s recovery was progressing well.

“When he got to the hospital, the doctor said surgery was necessary. The operation was successful and he is recovering from hospital, he is fine now,” assured Werner.

Du Preez senior told the Advertiser that the decision to take the player to Alberton for treatment was made by health workers at the hotel.
