Residents urged to disinfect wheelie bins

This is because waste collectors handle many bins on a daily basis.

The City of Ekurhuleni urges residents to wear gloves, wash their hands, and disinfect their bins to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

“The gloves they wear are for personal protection, and are therefore not regularly changed. Should one bin be contaminated, other bins handled thereafter may be contaminated,” explained Themba Gadebe, metro’s spokesperson.

“Customers urge customers to take precautionary measures, such as washing hands, wearing gloves, and disinfecting the bins to prevent contracting infections that may be caused by the multiple contacts waste collectors have with many bins.”
